The Art of Simplicity: A Design Philosophy

“The Art of Simplicity is indeed an art. It appears effortless but requires tremendous expertise to execute well. In design, true simplicity is a refined skill. It comes only through deep understanding and disciplined practice.

Stripped to essential elements, good design maintains purpose and beauty. It achieves timeless quality. I confirmed this thinking during a Kintsugi exercise at a retreat. This Japanese art repairs broken pottery with gold. It embraces imperfection as part of an object’s beauty.

My philosophy creates simple designs with just the right flair to last a lifetime. It’s about knowing what to keep and what to remove. Each element must serve a purpose while celebrating imperfection’s beauty.

Read more about my philosophy: it’s never too late to make imperfection beautiful.

Memories to Modern: Transforming Treasured Clothing

Evolving from its 1990’s origins, Brooks LTD creates memories to modern designs, transforming a treasured gown between mother and daughter.

This story beautifully illustrates the power of reimagining a piece of clothing for a new chapter in it’s cherished life. It demonstrates how quality garments can transcend their original purpose, adapting and evolving just as we do. Each piece carries memories while opening doors to fresh possibilities, bridging past and present in deeply personal ways.

This Brooks LTD custom dress bridges generations, read on for the shortened version…..

In 1990, the bride Carrie made a dramatic entrance on horseback wearing this stunning, custom-made gown by Brooks Luby.

Unconventional themes

While traditional venues were typical at the time, Carrie’s entrance was anything but conventional. This story likely resonates with those who appreciate unconventional wedding themes, venues, and attire.

Carrie circa 1990

Meet Zoe

Fast forward to 2023, and Carrie’s daughter, Zoe, got engaged. As athletic as they come, Zoe and her now-husband are avid travelers who seek out high mountain ranges for their adventures. Their lifestyle is exotic and always on the move, reflecting Zoe’s passion for health, fitness, and constant motion.

What you wear says alot about how you live and Zoe wanted this reflected in her gown with ease of movement in elegant fabric choices.

Fascinated by her mother’s wedding story, Zoe became enamored with the idea of wearing the same art wearable dress for her own wedding. Together with her mother, they opened the heirloom storage box that had preserved the gown for over three decades. To their delight, they discovered the original Brooks LTD label still intact, which led them back to me, the original wearable art designer.

Heirloom dress revealed

During our consultation, Zoe tried on her mother’s dress. It fit her like a glove, but she wanted to update it to suit her active personality and modern tastes. We lowered the neckline, removed the sleeves, took out the petticoat for a sleeker silhouette, and added a pocket for her vows – all changes that reflected Zoe’s style while maintaining the dress’s essence.

Zoe in her Mother’s gown after 30 years of storage, note the neckline, the fit and the sleeves, all about to change.

Transformation

New neckline, armhole and pocket details.

The Wedding Day

The result is captured perfectly in a photo that truly showcases Zoe’s personality. The image reveals the impeccable fit of the updated dress and her husband’s adoring look. Their smiles radiate joy and happiness, a testament to living a life together as a couple, the success of our collaboration and the dress’s transformation.

Wearable Art Clothing Designer

As the designer, I am forever grateful to have met Zoe after 30 years of knowing her mother. It gives me immense pleasure to help women attain the dress of their dreams. Working on my original dress was a treat, allowing me to appreciate its excellent construction from the inside out. The hand-stitched elements, luxurious fabric choices, and attention to detail – both in 1990 and now – make me proud to know that the dress has been passed down and worn with great pleasure.

For anyone inspired by this story or looking to breathe new life into a treasured garment, I encourage you to reach out. Together, we can transform any meaningful piece – whether it’s a beloved jacket, a family heirloom, or a vintage find – into something that honors its history while celebrating your present self. I specialize in creative transformations that break conventional rules, helping you showcase your authentic self through reimagined clothing that tells your unique story.

Zoe’s infectious smile

Connecting in a personal way

Zoe and I at the final fitting

Memories to Modern: Transforming Treasured Clothing

Quality garments can transcend any purpose, adapting and evolving just as we do. Maybe you’re entering a new phase of life and want your wardrobe to reflect who you’ve become. Whether you’ve embraced your natural gray hair, shifted to a more relaxed lifestyle, or simply want to express yourself differently, your clothing should be a true reflection of who you are.

For anyone looking to breathe new life into a treasured garment, I can help transform any meaningful piece into something that honors it’s history while celebrating your present self.

Together, we can create unique transformations that showcase your authentic self through reimagined clothing that tells your story. I encourage you to reach out,

This concept includes any cherished garment, I’ve been known to recreate pieces into wearables that break the rules and let you showcase your true newly discovered self where authenticity takes center stage.

Mending cherished textiles in the form of clothing, shawls, and sweaters has been at the forefront of the fashion and textile industry for some time. It extends the life of the garment and supports a less wasteful existence.

By working with your hands, the process of mending also calms the mind and allows you to think deeply about things that are personal to you. It’s about the journey and not the destination although, in this case, the destination can have a beautiful visual effect. I shared my personal mending techniques with clients and friends at my private atelier last month and found that there is great interest in the age-old practice of mending.

There are a few reasons why the art of mending matters has such appeal. By repairing a garment you gain a better understanding of it from a construction standpoint and connect yourself in a way to the original maker.

“When we spend time patching, stitching, darning, or otherwise fixing torn fabrics, we ultimately deepen our understanding of quality, composition, and craftsmanship.” —Excerpt from Mending Matters

Repairing a favorite garment

There’s also the environmental aspect. Mending can be a counterpoint to the dark side of consumption in the fashion industry. Lily Fulop, author of Wear, Repair, Repurpose: A Maker’s Guide to Mending and Upcycling Clothes, writes that “mending is an act of resistance — a rejection of the sort of capitalism that puts profit before the planet.” She even coined the term ‘Craftivism’ noting that the act of mending clothes is a form of activism that sends a message about reducing waste and minimizing environmental damage.

Mending can also improve your mental well-being. Taking time to do something with your hands, like the simple act of stitching, can create feelings of awareness and joyfulness. Mending is proof of the possibility of renewal. It also helps to reduce ‘eco-anxiety’ because it’s a concrete way to take action against the unsustainable practices in the fashion industry.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is in October. It is a gentle reminder to be procative with your individual wellness. Over 31 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The journey to wellness followed as I was lucky to integrate what I love to do (designing clothes) with my health and well being.

Survivors walk the runway for Breast Cancer Awareness

For those of you who don’t know my history, I was chosen to be the exclusive clothing designer for a Non Profit Organization, The Day of Caring over 8 years ago. For the next 5 years in succession I created garments for breast cancer patients (surviviors and those in treatment). Each woman had the benefit to have something designed for them by me to walk the runway at an evening event in Denver, Colorado. I met some amazing people and we all together showed our strength an perserverance during and after challenging times. It became a sisterhood of women going through hard times.

Images for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Survivors walking the runway in my designs throughout the years. I like to think of my brand in the category of top designer brands, created in Colorado. We fit a range of womens body types with comfort and ease as a main focus.

Meet Toby, wearing a jumpsuit with hand appliqued lace motifs on the bodice. The wool melton coat was hand painted and purchased in Paris. Note my love of interesting textures and fabrics. This ensemble is good for most female body types as it skims the body in just the right places-not to tight, not to loose. The second photo shows how to style the same jumpsuit with an embroidered kimono jacket to change up the look. One size fits all.

Exhuburant emotions while walking the runway, meet 3 ladies each wearing a style suitable for their personality as well as their individual body type. As you see we fit a range of female body types, sheath dresses to camouflage waistlines(red dress), loose fitting sleeves to cover your arms(black dress) or fitted bodices that accent your favorite parts and cover up your concerned areas (green dress).

Thank you Sue Miller, the Founder of The Day of Caring

One of our first events together was with Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble where their dancers wore my garments in an intimate setting. It was the beginning of wonderful collaborations with many to follow.

Sue Miller taught many people to embrace life no matter the circumstances. I know I still live by those thougths as do many that she’s touched. I am forever grateful.

It’s fun to dress up

Most women love to dress up and having this opportunity to do so on a runway was invigorating. Pictures say it all. Enjoy the joyfulness they express even in difficult times.

We try to make lemons out of lemonade. Afterall it is fun to dress up!

So much fashion news in Denver, Colorado. With the Met Gala behind us, the MTA awards, a new Denver Meow Wolf opening, and now a new season approaching at our Denver Art Museum there is alot of fashion news in Denver Colorado.

The DAM(Denver Art Museum) just received a $25 Million Dollar annomyous donation for the textile and design department. As The Denver Post headline says, “This gift could turn the Denver Art Museum into a fashion powerhouse.” Read the article in The Denver Post about the annomyous donation here.

As a longtime member of the Denver Art Museum, and a respected fashion designer for over 45 years here in Denver I couldn’t be more excited.

Fashion in Denver Colorado

The curator Florence Müller has accomplished so much for our city and I trust with this large donation The Denver Art Museum will have an effect on the global fashion community.

Florence Müller’s first large exhibit at the DAM in 2012 of Yves Saint Laurent was one of many more exhibits to follow. She fell in love with our city and accepted a job to forge ahead as DAM’s in-house fashion expert. Not only a fashion expert, but an avid lover of the out doors and a hiker, she has embraced Colorado lifestyle, as well as fashion and art. Consequently I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the fashion and textile department of The DAM.

I think this article from March 2020 (just as the pandemic had started) in Cherry Creek Fashion Magazine sums up her story, read it here.

Photo: EstherLeeLeach for Cherry Creek Fashion Magazine. Florence Mueller interview March 2020

Fashion West

Fashion West is a newly developed and well curated fashion show featuring designers from the West. Often one thinks of Fashion in the West as purely western style. Think cowboy boots, hats, bandanas and other such traditional things. Additionally western can mean many things to many people. The range of talent in this show will be very modern and nothing like one expects. Above all, I am honored to be a part of the whole and I am excited to show you my vision of Fashion in the West.

It’s more than western style, or western dress, it’s an attitude.

Additionaly, In preparation for the show I was recently interviewed by Charlie Price for the upcoming Fashion West Fashion Show in Denver Colorado. There are alot of insights as to the tranformation I have recently gone through being in isolation for the 2020 year of Covid. If in the Denver area, the show is August 16 doors open at 5PM at the Exdo Center.

Cow Punk? Absolutely.
Cow Chic? Indeed.
Cow Town? Not on your life.

From the interview in Fashion West:

You have such a range of work in your showroom, how would you describe your design style?

My aesthetic radiates a sophistication that is attained by using interesting textiles, handmade qualities, patterned with a semi tailored effect. My design style is consciously curating perfectly made garments that have a sense of whimsy, artful details with a flair for femininity.

Why are you – and – what is the thing you love most about being a citizen of The West?

I am forever grateful of my environment and it is constantly influencing my design and color choices. The noise of the fashion industry is tempered by my choice to live, play and work in The West. Being a creative has its advantages not necessarily where you live – as the world has become smaller. Things are more attainable with the Internet being so easy to adapt to. Of course the fashion mecca’s of the world also has its advantages. I choose slow fashion where I can be the Creative Director and maker of how and why my brand remains sustainable.

Your creations are often quite fluid – is that something you specifically intend and what are your favorite fabrics to create with?

Fluid fabrics enable the wearer to move seamlessly and joyfully. Women adore feeling feminine and being able to move in their clothes. I love to drape designs and let each textile speak to me. I am using my instinct and intuition rather than traditional methods learned. Fluidity has always been as aspect of what I achieve…now even more so since I have recently let go of many rules. As I create I am becoming one with each piece that is a new exploration of design with confidence and quality. Every piece has a story and people are very interested in listening to those stories and working directly with the creator. My voice is being heard!

You are a trailblazing business woman in Denver – and have been working as an independent designer for decades in Denver – a city some say disregards fashion – What made you launch here – how has it been and has the business and your clientele changed in recent years?

As a native after attending design school at Fashion Institute of Technology (1972) I made a conscious decision to take lifestyle over career. I always felt that executing and creating my craft could exist wherever I chose to be, all I needed were the right tools and equipment. Being in Denver has had its challenges and I have had to adapt to paring down some of my outrageous design aspects in order to maintain a sustainable business.

Being in business for over 45 years has made me adapt, pivot and recreate my business model and my clientele. More so this year (2020-21), than ever before. I am proud to say that some of my clientele is multigenerational. My designs have proven to trickle down from generation to generation as I am continuing to meet daughters of women I have worked with as far back as the beginning. With the influx of people moving to our Mile High City people have brought with them their sophistication but with a sense of comfort and ease. Environments have a tendency to change desires in how one presents themselves to the world when they dress. I say “Welcome to Colorado, embrace our sense of style, ease and comfort while living your best life”.

What fashion trend do you loathe and what fashion trend do you love?

As I look back at many archives I see a reflection of a continuous flow of a tailored effect mixed with a flair for creativity and whimsy. It just comes out that way; the mixture keeps it wearable for many women, conservative or edgy. I love that mixture, unexpected and definitely something I strive for in my designs so that they are a recognizable brand. I loathe garments that are not made with care and attention to details, seams that pucker, insides that aren’t finished and hanging threads (unless it’s intentional). Quality fabrics and workmanship are just as important as the design.

Covid Restrictions

Wondering about Covid Restrictions especially in the state in which you live? As we approach another season during Covid 2021 and if you are anything like me you are ready to interact with your community. Parties and events that were canceled last year are being challenged again this year. The rules and regulations keep changing as does the information about Covid and how to deal in the pandemic. Check with your local Governor’s office for specific State rules.

We have complied a list of tips that will help guide you for information. Please note that these statements are directly from either CEA (CO Events Alliance) or the Colorado Governor’s office.

Wear two masks

Wearing 2 masks instead of one is important. Social distancing is still enforced. Maintaining important events during this crisis is of great concern. Reaching out to Walli Richardson a party planner extraordinaire I asked her questions from her insider view as to how to plan events in times of Covid.

Walli Richardson and I wearing ‘vintage Brooks’, (Photo is circa 2019 at The Narrative in Denver, Cherry Creek North).

Timeless pieces for your creative lifestyle.

Insider information

How do we prepare for get togethers in times of Covid? Keeping the gatherings small is key. Checking on the CURRENT rules issued by the Governor’s office and CEA is of upmost importance. Number of guests is determined by the number of square footage in both indoor and outdoor planning. If a tent has walls, it is considered an indoor venue.

If we social distance and wear masks are outdoor venues safe? Yes, as long as you abide by the rules of how many guests per square foot; how you are serving food and beverage and how you are setting up the contact information.

What is the limit of guests for venues? Are venues booking events? There is a specific plan that has been developed for both outdoor and indoor venues. Check with your Governors’ office or specfically for Colorado.

In order to congretate at my private atelier do you have any advice on how to do this? (Private trunk show perhaps?) Set up in time blocks with no more that 2 guests per visit time. Allow a half hour between visits so that you are able to properly sanitize the clothing, your dressing room, restroom and the entire space.

Are weddings happening in today’s market? How about fashion shows? Small weddings, mostly in private homes/yards until later in year. The numbers per venue are already opening up and will continue to allow more attendees ~ especially in the summer months.

How are you planning your events if in fact the limitations change as the date gets closer? Using ZOOM to accommodate the larger groups. It all depends on the timing; as to whether the guest list can be made larger or smaller for the onsite event.

As we move forward, are people sharing platforms? Most events will now be hybrid. People on site and people on Zoom or electronic platform.

Food and beverage being delivered by designated caterer(s) or shipped ahead of time. Social events as well as corporate are embracing this concept, as they can keep in touch in real time and share the energy.

As of Febuary 26, Colorado is in the BLUE LEVEL.

LEVEL BLUE – CAUTION: 50% of posted occupancy limit not to exceed 175 people per room for unseated events. Seated events may have up to 225 people per room as long as they do not exceed 50% of the posted occupancy limit. The calculation of the available space many be based on 6-foot distancing between parties of 10 or fewer.

DANCING: Dancing strictly limited at all events to no more than 6 persons dancing together from the same party. Dancing parites must remain 6 feet from other persons and must folow current mask mandates. At weddings ~ the following dances are permitted: couples first dance and parent dances.

SEATING: Parties of 10 people or fewer may be seated together. There needs to be a 6 ft. distance between tables.

PERFORMERS: Performers are masked or behind barrier at 12 feet from attendees. Unmasked with no barrier at 25 feet from attendees.

Table seating guidance will match restaurant guidance allowing for parties of 10 at a 6 foot round table.

If we continue on our present projection, the Governor’s office is estimating a 10% increase each month in attendees ~ with a 75 – 85% capacity in July. This needs to be monitored and this is specifically for Colorado.

Thank you Walli Richardson for your insider views about Covid restrictions

It’s really not too early to start planning for 2022, I realize this is far away, however, because of cancelations venues will be booking this far out to help with the past two years of cancelations. Walli can be found here.

Visit Brooks LTD(Covid Restrictions apply) or Shop my Current Pieces

I am using zoom as a meet and greet for initial consultations, as a result, it’s a great way to start any conversation to get the ball rolling no matter what city you live in, that is the beauty of the internet.

I know alot of you would like to ‘get out’ of the house as you’ve told me so. Applying Covid Restrictions, I’ve been vaccinated and I’m ready to meet if you are. This would be a good way to achieve that.

I’ll supply libations!

There are more than few words of expression on my feelings about the week’s eruption: I am listening, learning and doing my best to understand the current situation in our country and the world. During this time of isolation, unrest and fear I am finding courage in the belief that the unrest will create change from which we will all benefit. One thing is sure, change must happen. During this time, much like many of you, I’ve read interviews, articles and posts and learned from people who are much more informed of anti-racist work than I am. I am confused on how to respond, but I know I support peaceful protests and the right for a major change in society.

Confused, Caring, Time for Change

These few words of expression on this photo has ‘Black Lives Matter’ painted on the street leading to White House speaks to the ongoing support.

Women of Color

In my everyday dealings I am very connected to women of color that I call my friends and colleagues. I am proud and honored to feature many women of color in many of my designs.

Expressions in my shadow

More than a few words of expression on how I’m feeling seen through my shadow.

It’s been quite an exciting winter already here at Brooks LTD! Before the hubbub of the holidays officially set in, I had a chance to meet someone whose work has been a tremendous inspiration to me – Ari Seth Cohen, creator of the Advanced Style blog. Ari’s blog has been at the forefront of the movement against ageism in fashion, with a mission to spotlight women over 60 who “live life to the fullest, age gracefully and continue to grow and challenge themselves” (via Advanced Style’s About page). Featuring street style photos that show the “sartorial savvy of the senior set,” Ari’s work has helped bring mainstream awareness to the idea that “you can be stylish, creative and vital at any age.” Needless to say, Ari and his blog have been influential in my own work to eradicate ageism as I make my way through life’s many stages as a fashion designer.

Advanced Style’s Ari Seth Cohen outside of his book signing, flanked by myself and Judith from Style Crone, wearing her custom Brooks LTD headpiece

Ari’s blog showcases some incredibly fabulous New York City women, as well as some closer to (our) home – including my dear friend (and Brooks LTD model) Judith Boyd of blog Style Crone. In addition to his blog, Ari also has written several books. His latest, “Advanced Love,” is a collection of couples’ portraits “who prove that love is bound by neither the constraints of age or time.” Judith had the honor of co-hosting Ari for his Denver book signing at local boutique Wild Flowers, along with shop proprietor Jonah Bradley. Of course the occasion called for pulling out all the stops in creative dressing. I was thrilled to find that Judith chose to wear her Brooks LTD oversized bow headpiece as a topper to her vintage purple dress. This was a style that I custom designed with her in mind as my muse – hence it’s official name, “The Judith.” I find that the more Judith and I work together, and the more our friendship evolves, her unique style consistently inspires me to discover new ways of expressing my craft.

Myself and two friends (both in Brooks LTD!) enjoying ourselves at Ari Seth Cohen’s book signing

Ari and Judith’s discussion that night left me with a newfound appreciation for the art of dressing. It was a joyful reminder that fashion can have deeper meaning than just being the clothes on your back. And oh how radiant Judith looked next to Ari in her vintage taffeta dress and Brooks LTD headpiece! It’s opportunities like these that bring an extra dose of excitement to what I do.

Denver fashion is lucky to have such knowledgeable people in our community as the Denver Art Museum’s Florence Müller, and 5280 Magazine Fashion Editor Georgia Benjou. This week, these two fashion powerhouses were brought together for a workshop through Denver Fashion Week. Georgia, who also works as a freelance stylist, writer and consultant, moderated the discussion with Florence, who spoke about her work with the museum and reflected on fashion in general. As a longtime member of the Denver fashion industry myself, I found the discussion to be inspiring and enlightening.

The DAM’s Florence Müller and fashion editor Georgia Benjou in intimate conversation for their Denver Fashion Week workshop

Seven years ago, Florence was first introduced to Denver as an independent curator from France, bringing the acclaimed Yves Saint Laurent exhibit to the DAM (which was, in fact, the exclusive US venue for this show). The show was an overwhelming success. Florence attributed that success to the wide range of people, coming from all walks of life in Denver and the greater Rocky Mountain area, who came to see and learn about fashion. It was clear that fashion sparked an interest in the public here – an indication that the exhibit was on the right track. In 2015, Florence was bought on in an official, permanent capacity as the DAM’s Avenir Foundation Curator of Textile Art and Fashion.

Shock Wave was the first exhibit that Florence curated from her new DAM curatorial position – a stunning retrospective of groundbreaking Japanese fashion from the 1980s and 90s. She explained how she reached out to local retail proprietress Cathy Covell from Lawrence Covell to acquire pieces for the show, as Cathy’s store was one of the first in the country to carry several of the designers featured in the exhibit. Florence and her team sought to integrate their work within the local community, also calling upon fashion-forward boutique Goldyn to host a private opening reception and fashion show in conjunction with the exhibit.

Since these first two (frankly out-of-the-ballpark) exhibits, Florence has hardly taken a break. She’s been hard at work bringing more top-tier programming to the museum, including The Dior show last year. During the talk, I learned that there are four more exhibits scheduled in the next few years – the first of which is slated for Sept 2020, yet to be announced. We will all wait anxiously in anticipation!

I had the opportunity to chat one-on-one with Florence after her conversation with Georgia that evening. Knowing her background working with the likes of Chanel, Dior, Gucci and Celine, I was curious to hear about the quality of designer dresses walking the runway in a show. As a couture designer, I know that whipping up a dress for a runway show can be very trying, requiring many last minute adjustments, as compared to coming up with a custom piece for a client. I was curious about her knowledge of what the inside of one of these runway confections looked like. She had a long explanation that spoke to her expertise: essentially that each situation is different, but for the most part, the insides are not completed like a normal couture gown. Just as I suspected! There’s an interesting twist however; For this reason, these runway pieces can actually be much more expensive than a finished garment. Why, you may ask? Because it is a ‘true’ original gown. A collector’s piece if you will. A work of art in-progress where the creator adds last minute touches before it goes down the runway. Creative freedom by the designer. Music to my ears!

Mona Lucero and I, post talk. Photo courtesy of Kate Nelson.

Florence also spoke about the 1980s as being a period of designers’ creative freedom, versus the 1990s where big companies began to rule the destiny of major fashion houses. Of course, in order to succeed, a design house must make money on their products. However, as Florence stated, designers were less ruled by the owners of the larger holding companies in the 80s – more free to create their art – whereas now creativity is only part of the big picture.

I could relate to a lot of what she was talking about. Even though I am a small independent designer, where I am lucky to have creative control over everything, I still need to consider the end result: selling my work. It’s always a fine line between art and commerce. This past weekend, I had a related realization while chatting with some CSU students (more on that later), where I said, “I should just try making clothes that I want to wear, as a total experiment to see if they are desirable.” I’ll be the first to admit I can overthink what I do in order to please the public. Maybe I’m onto a new direction? Stay tuned.
